freelance/selfemployed?

I've been working for a company full time for 2 years as freelance, so for tax purposes I'm self-employed, even though I have my own desk, phone, pc etc and I work onsite 42 hrs/wk.

My question is: how easy would it be for me to write off the purchase of a laptop as a business expense and would it be worth it?

I've been looking to get myself a nice laptop, and I should be able to use it here at the office instead of this antiquated POS that they have on my desk now - it occured to me that this route might make such a puchase possible, but I have zero experience with such things.

Anyone here with experience that can offer some words of wisdom?

If you are freelance, and paying freelance taxes(14.7% plus state I *think*) then there really shouldn't be any problem with it I would imagine.

If you are filing self employed, or schedule c, I would be(and I do) claim any, and every expense that I could.

If they do not withhold employment taxes, buy it and put it on Schedule C (as vi-edit stated).

If employment taxes are withheld, the situation becomes dicey. The IRS may consider you as an employee.
