freelance programming?

Basically I'm looking for a way to make some extra money. Anybody with experience as a freelance software developer, can you share some advice on how to get started with it?
 
If you're just starting out, you might check for local consulting firms that need slave labor, uh, I mean entry level workers 😉 . A friend picked up some database development experience that way, starting with zero work experience. A small shop might also be more likely to overlook lack of a degree.

PS I'd recommend this over trying to do work for friends or friends of friends if you can. Much better to learn and make mistakes with strangers 🙂
 
Good idea, I'll give that a shot. I do have a degree (BS in comp sci) and 4 yrs of experience plus 1 yr of vb .net programming.
