My friend has a drive that whined for the past 4 months. It's still alive and running although I wish it would die. :|

My housemate has a hard-drive that whines a bit, sometimes louder than others. Out of warranty period :(, but if I get mad at its noise and end up putting a hammer/bullit through it I'll get him a new one :)

My housemates one is in the common hall where I do my regular TV viewing and it pisses me off so much. He doesn't even know that the hdd is making that piss off noise. :| I'm tempted to treat the hdd a can of beer.

I am getting really scared with reading all these WD SE drives dying. I just bought 2 WD1200JB's the other day. They were manufactured Dec. 17 and 18, 2002. So maybe these are just older drives and they fixed the problem, at least I am hoping so.

I had a 120 WD SE, stupid thing was hella loud then toward the end I could hear it 3 rooms away. Returned it and got a 120 8MB Maxtor with Fluid bearings, I love this hard drive!!!! Hardly makes any noise at all. Computer runs pretty darn quiet now thanks to it. Best hard drive I have owned to date :) Get a Maxtor!

I hope the 80 gig doesn't have a problem :(

If it does, I'll just burn my data on discs and then RMA it....

I hope :(

Does OEM hds carry RMAs or is that retail only?

My western digital 80 gig SE doesn't make any whining noises...

although my case has an insane amount of fans and 3 hard drives, so maybe it does and I'm not aware... :p

I have more fans than that and I noticed the insane whine when I powered up my pc using my friend's hdd. Even my gf woke up. :D

My ibm 75 GXP is trying to die right now as I type this. It's done this before and I'm just moving stuff off of it right now.

It was super quiet untill just yesterday. Does WD know about this problem, does anyone know if they fixed it or what causes it? I dont want to RMA it and have another one go bad in 6 months from now. This is the first computer iv ever had any HD problem with. I mean the cheapo internet special computer that I have as backup never makes a sound. You would think that added $ for a WE drive would have better quality bearing, if thats even the problem. And ya I'v had the HD for about 6 months now, I got it from Newegg.com as an OEM part can I RMA it still, who do I go through Newegg or WD?

I have right now 2 WDC's in the RMA package and ready to go to post office to send them (older WDC 40GB AB-5400rpm but still under warranty, and new WDC 80GB 80JB -7200rpm -SE edition). I realized that all WDC are prone to bearing whine sooner or later, and I'm finished with WD brand unless they'll upgrade their bearing technology.

Btw, I always used to buy WDC drives (and thought that the whine is inevitable) until I bought some IBM's, Maxtors and Seagates in the last 1-2 years .... I see that bearing whine is really a WDC "specialty", and the only good thing about WDC is that they seem to replace their whiners without further questioning. When they are new and quiet they work very nice, but they won't stay quiet often too long. Others may think otherwise, but this is my experience. I currently own some 8-10 WDC's.

dave

I forgot to mention one maybe somehow important fact; all my boxes are very quiet - I use either quiet, quality low-rpm fans (thermal controlled, variable speed & plain low rpm), or undervolting other fans (incl. CPU fans) if necessary and when possible to bring the noise down. In this environment I can clearly hear if drive emits noise or not.... for instance the Enermax fans in my HDD cages spin somewhere around 1500 rpm...

whining HD = bearings gone bad. It's always better to get an HD with fluid bearings as they are much quieter and more durable.

if fluid bearings were so great other companies would start making them and including them...

is maxtor the only one who has them?

I don't know about you but so far my old hard drives that certainly weren't fluid bearing have been running just fine non stop for a couple of years with no problem.

I think Seagate had implement it with their barracuda Series.

I think not all use them b/c they're more expensive. For example, why don't fans use fluid bearings? It's possible, and would reduce the noise drastically. But for cost reasons, no known fans make use of them.

Don't tell me these WD SEs are going to join the IBM Deathstars in the "Anandtech over-hyped hall of fame".

Jeez, I just bought a 80 gig SE

Maxtor and Seagate both use fluid bearings with great results; also newer laptop 2.5" IBM Travelstar drives use fluid bearings and are pretty good .
I own all above mentioned drives, so can compare with WDC.
