Since putdowns in our childhood separated us from our true selves, we have all been forced to adopt false egos identified with this or that empty external instead. Now when any data presents itself to threaten our false identification, we react with defensiveness and hate. We want, on the one hand to continue the pretence undisturbed, and on the other to get even for the pain of separation from the only source of true meaning.

Notfred,

As I said in my previous post, "freedom of speech" pertains to LEGAL freedoms only. It does not protect you from being socially outcast, nor should it. I should not be forced to listen to, or agree with what you say and vice versa.

Person two is merely expressing their opinion. You don't like that opinion, therefore you don't think they should express it in the way they did. How are you any different than they?

I'm not saying that they shouldn't be allowed to express thier viewpoint, I'm simply saying that it's a viewpoint that really doesn't fit with the American Constitution, similar to "everyone should have freedom of speech, unless of course you do not obey or suppoort America" from the original post.

notfred, it's "their"

If what you say is true, I'm presented with two options.

1) Either you are not the "only source of true meaning," and I can completely disregard your message, or:

2) You are the "only source of true meaning," in which case my argument would be that I feel no pain of separation.

I'm sorry somebody called you stupid when you were 5. It probably wasn't nice. But your decision to adopt a "false ego" and put on an "empty external" is by choice, not by force.

You forgot one option, xirtam. You cannot feel. Your mental sophistry is there to see to it.

I was talking about meaning, Moonbeam. It had little to do with my empathetic ability.

1. A stupid person will never change their mind. The first person who talks to them can convince them of a point and after that, they stick with it. Example: Republicans.

2. A stupid person will always tell you that you are unpatriotic if you disagree with them and you should get the hell out.

3. Underestimating stupid people, in mass numbers, results in things like George Bush getting elected, economy down the toilet and wars that could have been dealt with diplomatically.

Ever noticed that People in the Middle East don't appear to be afraid our us when a Bush is in the White house? First with Bush Sr. we fought in Dessert Storm. Now with a Dick and a Bush (Jr.) in the W H, Osama decided the time was right and Saddam dares to defy us. We're only on our second Bush and already we've had three 'Wars', Dessert Storm, War on Terrorism, and now this. I hope we don't have to go through another Bush in the future. BUSH = WAR?

xirtam, I was also talking about meaning:

--------------------
The claim is useless because you cannot feel. And it has nothing to do with empathy; it has to do with access to the unconscious. It's not called the unconscious for nothing. :D But it wasn't my intention to be the only source of true meaning. I was just making some comments I think are important for any of the curious who might happen along.

No, it looks like you don't. I would even think it obvious I wasn't being sarcastic. But Like I said, that's part of what cleaverness does, it keeps one away from feeling and intuition, and of course, from pain.

So neo-conservatives are the cause for the world's problems?

So you've sacrificed sarcasm for empathy?

Or were you just being sarcastic about being sarcastic?

Not sure how you gather that I have neither intuition nor emotion.
