I've been trying to install freebsd on a second machine, but whenever I return from the X configuration, the screen is all garbled and I can't go any further. Why is this happening?

the hardware:
1.2 GHz celeron
512 Mb ram
abit sh6 motherboard (i815e chipset)
sb live 5.1
nvidia geforce 2 gts
dlink 530-tx nic

EDIT: freebsd 4.7

Skip the X configuration and see if it still locks up. If FreeBSD installs, just edit your /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config and also your ~/.xinitrc manually.

thanks, I'll give that a try.

UPDATE: It worked. I'm posting this from mozilla in FreeBSD. I just got it installed. So far, I like this better than linux, it's quite a bit faster.

You have been fortunate to have TheOmegaCode look at your thread, a very smart fellow.
