FreeBSD for everyday use.

Hello,

I've been using Linux for a while and I can see that I can do all my everyday jobs with ease. Taking my e-mail, surfing the web, using openoffice.org to write documents, doing my master thesis.

Now I would like to try FreeBSD but as far as I know it is more network-oriented and is mainly used for servers.

Can I use FreeBSD for my everyday use or is an overkill?

It's no more overkill than Linux, just about all of the software will be exactly the same. You'll still be using Gnome, Thunderbird, vim, FireFox, etc. The low level tools, kernel, system config files, etc will be a little different but that's about it. That and you'll have to get used to the package management and ports on FreeBSD.

It most certainly "can" be used for everyday use. The installer is a little bit more complicated then most of the GUI driven linux distros out there, but It's really nice to work with once you have it running. That said, I tend to prefer OpenBSD myself, but they use the same ports tree..... If you're comfortable with Linux, you'll probably adapt and get comfortable with BSD without too much trouble.
