Free Xerox Color Laser (with restrictions)

Greetings, long time listener first time caller...

This might be an oldie, but I didn't see it in a search and I keep getting ads for this deal. Sorry if this has been covered already.

Free Xerox Phaser 8200 printer.

The good:
1. A decent (?) printer for a good price.
2. "No risk" application

The bad:
1. It's free because you agree to buy your future toner and "maintenance" supplies from them.
2. You must send them a monthly report (auto-generated by the printer) on your usage
3. Organizations only - Business, non-profits, schools, etc.

They don't tell you how much their toner costs, which could be bad, but I don't think you're committed to buy by signing up for free membership. I would try one, but I'm not a business or organization.

I'm sure the toner is higher than you can get it elsewhere, but this might be a decent way to "lease" a color laser printer through toner "payments"...

it is not laser, it uses ink stick

Item Description Cost Pages Printed*
ColorStix 8200 2-pack Two-pack of Cyan, Magenta or Yellow ColorStix $79.99
ColorStix 8200 5-pack Five-pack of Cyan, Magenta or Yellow ColorStix $169.99
ColorStix 8200 Black Ink 5-pack Five-pack of Black Ink $89.99
Standard maintenance kit Standard oil roller and counter $119.99 up to 10,000 pages
Extended maintenance kit Extended life oil roller and counter $199.99 up to 40,000 pages

"you dont have to buy anything from them, you can get it cheaper from ebay. "

actually, i thought part of getting the printer was that you agree to buy supplies from them? on their website it says:

Members of Xerox FreeColorPrinters agree to:
Purchase their ink & maintenance supplies exclusively from FreeColorPrinters.com
Send in a monthly report which is generated by the printer

how often do you need to buy the supplies? are you required to buy the supplies even if your current cartridges are not empty yet?

This thread rears its head every once in a while. Unless you kill a few trees a month, this is not worth your while. It is really intended for an office environment where there will be a lot of color printing.

We have a couple of 8200s and 860s around the office and they break constantly. You'd spend less money buying a nice color inkjet every 6 months.

i've had mine 2 yrs, printed almost 60k pages, only had it maintenanced once. not sure what you guys are doing to your machines.

i've had mine in the office for about 6 months, hitting about 13K prints and hums perfectly. except for the fact that i forgot to fax in my report last month, that mistake cost my lazy ass 108.25 (100 +tax). but all in all a great printer taht is worth it.

you could also just use it as a black and white printer as well, that way it will almost be free since the black ink is cheap as hellllllllllllllllll.
