Actually, (and someone who knows more about 802.11x then I do come in and fill in the blanks) many companies do not go to the trouble to secure their 802.11x networks, so you can just set your wireless NIC to "discover" mode and drive around town until one pops up. I saw an article in pc magazine some time back where they did that, they found you could access the internet, and sometimes, the internal networks themselves, all through unsecured 802.11x access points.

Am I not mistaken that there are some locations that offer free wireless internet service?

For instance in Houston, TX there are several that lists as: Free Community Network. Does that not offer free access then?

sweet...sea-tac is about 10 miles from my apartment. Looks like my brother-in-law and I will be taking a little trip down to the airport tomorrow. Too bad parking is $5/hour.

Does anyone know of any other wireless sniffer programs that will scope out 802.11b networks (PocketPC or Laptop)? The one that's linked to doesn't work with most PC Card 802.11b cards (including the Linksys).

Before you head off to Sea-Tac airport to pick up your $7.95 WIFI card just remember that it's at a GATE. You can't get past security nowadays without holding a ticket for a flight. No way to get there unless you're travelling somewhere!

The free Wireless NIC offer requires a 12 month contract to Boingo unlimed service @ $79.95 per month pre-billed to your CC. I got all excited seeing this promo advertised at the airport last month while in Seattle on business only to get disappointed after reading the "fine print".
