Here's my question. Why is this site getting slammed? Would a true MS server go under like this? Youtube serves millions of videos every day and stays up fine. MS is one of the wealthiest corps in the world, and I've never seen them get bogged down.

My other question is why the hell is this site registered to a guy in a flat in London?

These are serious red flags, IMO. good luck to those who venture in.

Software companies give away free software all the time, especially to people they think will help sell the product. The discs themselves only cost a couple bucks to produce the packaging. The only thing they're really "out" is a small number of potential sales. The way MS thinks about it is if they get Vista into the right people early on, each copy of Vista will generate more sales as those people will be able to develop software for Vista, recommend it to their company/customers/etc.

I work as a software developer and IT consultant for small businesses. If I had a copy of Vista I'd be a lot more likely to advise customers to upgrade (or at least plan on upgrading) their business computers to Vista in a year or two. If I don't have a copy, I'm much more likely to tell them to stick with what they've got. They're not just giving it away with the click of a web-form, they're giving it away to anyone willing to watch the three boring-to-anyone-but-a-MS-developer videos. That's going to filter out anyone but the most dedicated, which are really the people they WANT to have the software in the first place.

In short, giving away 10,000 copies of Vista is NOTHING if it gets to the right 10,000 people (or even the right 5000 out of 10000 people).

look at all the 'free advertising' they are getting on ALL the tech forums 😉

they created a "rush" that [evidently] overwhelmed MS' servers
... all for an undetermined amount of product ...

that's 'viral marketing' at its most refined ... awesome

as far as "watching" the videos ... do you have to answer questions? if not, you only have to play them to get 'credit'

FINALLY... as to the 'tax' thing ...

... can't you take delivery before Dec 31 of one product and delivery of the other in Jan?
that would eliminate the tax liability.

[you might get them both in Jan ... so that wouldn't work]

I'm stuck in this never-ending loop. I put my shipping info in, click next, wait about 10 or so tries before i get to the page where it shows im logged in. It then asks me to select the videos to watch... again. I select the videos then click next and I get to the part where I fill in my address and stuff. Repeat. Weird...
 
How the hell do you log in? lol

I login, and it still says im guest...no way to sign up. site is pretty poorly designed, oh well 🙂

how are you logging in? i login with my msn account and it just says i'm a guest...how do you create an account? i see no 'register' button.

I had that happen to me at first. Then I edited some of my account information (there was a problem with my phone number) and after that it always logged me in correctly. I wasn't using an MSN id though. I was using my Windows Live ID that I registered during the Vista Beta.

I only got one "survey" email for the first webcast that I watched, it was quick and painless stuff, just asking how I liked the presenter, layout and content-no specific questions on anything in that particular webcast.
After not getting any other confirmation that I had in fact watched the other 2 I sent off email to the above address and that was the response.

Of course I watched the whole webcasts 😉
Well, I at least had one eye on them-my picks were "recasts" not live-I hit the links and the individual casts loaded up in WinAmp-once buffered you could pretty much just skip to the end so I don't see how they would verify whether you in fact watched the whole thing?
IMO the actual verification was the the info that you entered after selecting the link so you could start the d/l-since there was no interaction possible with the recasts there really could be no way to know whether they were watched or not.
 
It took forever for me to register as I kept getting "server errors" and timeouts but I'm just now in to where I can see my webcasts. Having to retry this serveral times as well

open up your commandprompt and do a tracert if you are running windows.

see where your problem is because I'm in southern illinois and I get in to that site EVERY time. It's getting the media player to connect to the webcast where I am having problems
 
I'm having trouble connecting to the live meeting replay. Anyone try to download the replay for offline viewing? is the offer still valid if one view the vids offline?

 
I dont think it is because I didn't get a "pending" on my progress until i viewed the online version, it will just take a boat load of patience
