a guy I know who's into wrestling was telling me today that free weights were actually invented in the 1940s -- that nobody ever used "weights" before that; they just did pushups and pullups and that kinda stuff.

that's pretty cool if it's true

I don't know. It could be true, though. Weight training for athletes did not become popular until the 60's-70's, especially for Baseball players.

Barbells != free weights

Actually...a free weight is any weight device which is not structurally supported or moving in a predetermined fashion. A smith press is NOT a free weight machine. Dumbbells definitely qualify as free weights.

Sandow is the most famous example.

And weightlifting with purpose-built weights probably goes back much farther than that.

Henry VIII had a system of weights and pulleys that he used in getting ready for battle.
