Hi all,

I used to use Geocity for putting up my webpage. But this morning I just got a mail from them saying that they no longer provide free service. Is there any good equivalent I can turn to?

Thanks,

try Tripod, I've had my site with them for years (probably not for much longer though).

Geocities is closing? That sucks, I had a side site with them.

<< What? I didn't get any notification of that. My site's still up. Plus, go to http://geocities.yahoo.com/ and look at the left frame that says "Sign up for a free web site". That's really interesting... >>

Thanks guys. And sorry to geocity coz I read the e-mail so quickly that I missed the point. They actually said that FTP update is not free anymore.

If you can't update via FTP, how are you supposed to update your site?
Like inbound traffic is really their problem ... It's got to be a fraction of what their outbound bandwith uses are.

What!?! No way!!! I didn't get anything from them saying that! Aw, that bites. How am I supposed to update my site? Time to go hunting for a really, really cheap web server provider. :(

Well, I just logged into my FTP account. It looks free to me so far. I find all this very interesting. Can you quote the exact email? I'm updating my site just fine, too. (See below)

Anyways, keep using your account. Since I'm certain you have it on your hard drive, and not just all on Geocities, if it ever stops being free, you can always switch it somewhere else, worry-free.

Later...

Yeah geocities is stopping their FTP upload service... so from now on you will have to logon to their website and upload files...

I got an e-mail from them a couple of days ago as well...

I tried the 'file manager' tingie. It is fine but I don't like updating my site with it. I'd rather use it as a flow reporter or sth.

As a side note, I have had sites hosted on both geocities and tripod before and when I changed to a dedicated paid host, it pretty much tripled the speed of access to my site via my friends 56k modem.
