Does anyone know a good, free VOB file converter? I'm using a free trial of RealPlayer for now but of course eventually that will run out.

If I'm following you right, you can use Handbrake. This assumes that the VOBs are already decrypted or they are not encrypted in the first place. Convert to the MP4 (H264) format and you should be good since that's the standard MPEG-4 container/codec combo.

If you just have a single VOB, use the File option. If several are linked together, you can use the Folder option.

What exactly are you attempting to do?

Convert decrypted VOB files from movie & television DVDs for personal use.

Thanks. I have a question, though -- is it better to convert them to MP-4 or WMV?

That appears to cost money; I already have a free DVD Decrypter, I just need a VOB converter.

Yep, always go H264 (MP4 container) unless you have a specific need for WMV. It's a standardized format like MPEG2, so it has the greatest current compatiblity and greater backwards compatiblity chance in the future. For maximum compatibility, use Low Profile.

Convert to what? If you just want something that will playback on just about anything, try this:

http://www.svcd2dvd.com/VOB2MPG/default.aspx

You don't need the pro version and it only takes about 4 minutes compared to re-encoding it as an .mp4 via Handbrake or whatever. Plus, you'll get ZERO loss of quality.

Huh, for some reason it never crossed my mind to just strip the streams out of the VOB container and remux 'em into a new container. Certainly the quickest route.

*shrug* All perfectly valid options given the provided details.

Keep in mind handbrake and the others are not converting, they are re-encoding.

Big difference.

re-encoding will result in quality loss.

OP: You still haven't said why you want to convert them. Stop making us guess at what your goal is.

I just want to rip videos off of various TV show and movie DVDs that I own and store them on my PC for later viewing when I don't have the DVDs with me.

Then why "convert" them? Keep the DVD structure intact and you can navigate them just like the DVD.

The answers are right here:

1 - Rip the DVD (make sure you uncheck the option to break the DVD up into 1GB chunks)
2 - Convert the resulting .vob to .mpg with vob2mpg.

Done. No loss in quality.

As u know, the free ones often have some limitations. Bcz of this, I bought a vob converter on the rersoft website. It is not expensive and do not need to pay for the update.
Well, if u find a free one that could be used very well and have no limitations, pls let me know.
