The OCD way:
Virtualdub + lots of drivespace + Lagarith + LAME + RazorLame + Virtualdubmod + MP3Gain

- Do your editing to Lagarith - it's lossless compression, but uses a lot of space. Splice together the video like you want, stick it all together into one file.
- Open file with Virtualdubmod.
- Output the audio to a WAV file.
- Compress it to MP3 using RazorLame and this: -b 192 -m s -q 0 --replaygain-accurate (increase bitrate as desired, maybe to 256)
- Open with MP3Gain. Set target volume to 89.0 dB.
- Add the new MP3 file.
- Click Track Analysis, then Track Gain.
- Back to Virtualdubmod - disable the file's existing WAV audio stream, replace with MP3 audio
- Compress to lossy compression codec of choice. XviD offers good compatibility and adequate quality. I have yet to get x264 to work at all for me.
