By looking at the Gamespy stats TF2 is ranked below Quake 3 Arena, which is better than being below Soldier of Fortune 2, which is was a few months ago.. I guess they're pulling out all the stops to try to get people playing it again.
My opinion is that they tried to listen to the community too much, which is mostly caustic forum dwellers and Beta test fanboys. The game has some serious issues with fairness and map design. Good team games allow teams to survive if they don't work together well, but win if they work do together. TF2 gets the later part right, but unfortunately really punishes the losing team to a rape fest. Ultimately not fun in the long run and probably a good indicator as the why people have abandoned the game so quickly.

I took the opportunity to try TF2 with this free weekend and played for ~ 3 hours last night. I'll probably play it tonight and tomorrow until the trial runs out, but unless something magical happens in the next 2 sessions, I'm probably going to pass on buying it.
Only played 3 classes -- sniper, heavy, and scout. Did okay as a sniper, got pwned as a scout, and dominated as a heavy. And this was my first time playing this game. As a noob, my initial observation is that this game has serious character/class imbalances.
Don't know, but I would think if I wanted a frag fest, there are probably other games like UT3 that are better.

After a few hours of play I decided not to buy.
Its lotsa fun, but nothing really special, and I've got too many SP video games I havent beat yet.
I seem to recall hearing about a lot issues with the Medic, but since they added his Achievements people really like him.
Whenever I was a Demoman or Heavy I had 5 guys healing me.
Interesting note, I get way more kills with sticky bombs then regular grenades.
I like the Taunts. If Pyro has a shotgun equipped he does a Ho-du-ken!

I played for a bit lat night. It is pretty fun. It reminds me of NOLF MP with classes (which I used to play a lot). I really liked how smoothly it ran also. Obviously a quality product. I am undecided if I will purchase it though.

The only thing bad about this is.... for three days there are really horrible people on your team, while very unfortunately the opposite team happens to get 0 of the noobs. I don't mind new people being introduced to TF2, but having them on your team just sucks.

I had a good time.. I may pick up the orange box for $20 when I see it available. Not paying $20 for just tf2 when orange box is $30.
I saw orange box for $25 a while back.. So $20 seems like a good deal these days..

I spend so much time playing TF2, so a great game!!! The maps are perfectly balanced, same with classes, cant ask for more in any modern mp fps! And the graphics rock, source engine ftw. Oh, and each character was such an awesome personality.,.. Well the whole game is damn near perfect.
