Free Space Optics

I'm trying to put together a solution for a remote building with line-of-site and barely 100m away. I came across some information (Lightpointe/Canon) regarding Free Space Optics and while it seems promising I'm still a little skeptical. Anyone here have any experiences with this technology?

Nope, never heard of it, but it sounds cool 😉 Are we talking about using a couple of lasers to send data between buildings?

Yes. So called "optical wireless"

very niche market and not needed by most folk. prone to reliability problems.

I've looked at the FSO stuff a little. We actually have a P2P radio solution that carries an OC3 (3 DS3's) between buildings that are about 5 blocks apart. Like FSO it requires line of sight and *can* be subject to interference, although we haven't experienced any.

I've heard folks recommend using a high-powered AP as a repeater (Cisco?) for getting across short distances, like a parking lot. I think the free space optics are going to be pretty damn expensive.
