Free space optical communication

I want to ask anyone if you know about free space optical communication. Can you give me some insight about this technology. Whether it is accepted nowadays and used widely in any country? How is the reception of this technology?

Is there something you are specifically asking? They are used periodically but are being used less since radio has just about matched it for performance and tends to be cheaper.

Canon Canobeam has been around for well over a decade, I think they're up to GigE+ rates and can go (in good environments) many miles.
