Hello guys. I'm in need for advice here. I have this small workgroup network of 15 pc's, and I'd like to give them the ability to exchange emails between each other. I have been looking and searching this. I can see that codetwo public folders can be used to do this but it is not free. Also, Pegasus Mail can do it as well but I have been told that it has many problems. I know that there are so many email software out there than can be used to do so many things, right? What I want is just simply like I explained above: exchanging email between members of a workgroup network(No domain, so no central server...). I want a software that can make one pc act like the server and link each user some how.

Can mozilla thunderbird be configured to do this? I can't waste more time, and I need to implement this soon, so please direct me in the right direction.

The software doesn't need to be very professional, but still need to be able to do basic email functions like attaching a file, creating contact groups, sending a cc to some few members and maybe bcc to some other members.

Thanks.

The obvious answer is any of the web based email services.

Sorry if i didn't make this clear the first time, but the computers aren't connected to the internet. In fact, they can't connected to it. It is not an option.

I'm now trying codetwo public folders but it is just confusing for me. How on earth do you configure outlook after installing codetwo public folders so that you can exchange emails in a workgroup network?

Please if somebody knows, tell me!

I used HMailServer for my lab to receive messages from my test gear. I used Thunderbird as the client but any of them would work.

How? Can you please tell me in steps? I don't mind if you treat me as the stupidest person ever.......Please walk me through it in steps.

Something like this:
1- Install thunderbird in one machine?

2- install hmailserver on all machines?

.........etc

Thanks

Well HMailServer is the server. Install it on a server somewhere. Install Thunderbird, Outlook, Mutt, whatever on the clients. Point their SMTP/POP3/IMAP settings at the HMailServer. Configure HMailServer for an internal name ie "supersecret.local" and then configure users IE "Bob@supersecret.local" and "Steve@supersecret.local."

Also read the docs. HMailServer is pretty well documented. In reality, just about any of the major mail systems can work stand alone. IE Exchange, EXIM, sendmail, Eudora server etc. It just depends on what you want and what you are willing to learn / pay for someone to setup.

Hmmm. It is a bit clear now. Please say yes, you are not leaving this thread before I fully understand how this thing work. I'm off now, but I will download it and try it the very first minute I reach work. I'll either come back here with a happy face OR with many questions to you!

Thanks.

imagoon, I'm trying to follow this youtube video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SZcogPRXNk

It is great and very straightforward, but when I go view part 2, it gets different. It is talking about creating a host bla bla bla which shouldn't be something I will need because I want to do it inside a workgroup and exchange emails between peers.

I'm just making sure, is the first video applicable in my case. If yes, I'll just follow it. If not, please tell me what's different.

Thanks.

Well you do need to set up the host names and domain names but they will be fake and for internal use only like I mentioned in host #12. It does have to at least resolve.

I got very busy all of the sudden and couldn't try things out.

I'll try it now though in few minutes although I didn't really understand how to setup fake host names and fake domain names. I'll try and see where I reach and I will then come back here for help.

Thanks.

You would need to setup DNS on something. Technically bob@192.168.1.15 works but most people won't remember the IP address properly so use DNS to make a name for the server.
