A friend of mine has his own web site and gets his email through there, but doesn't have an ISP. He asked me how he can send email, and I don't really know. Are there any free SMTP servers he can use? Any recommendations or places to stay away from?

If, for some strange reason, his non-existant ISP doesn't have an SMTP server, some free e-mail services like Softhome let you use their's.

He connects through his school's internet connection (he lives in a dorm), but for some reason he can't use their SMTP server.

Erm, ok, buddy, I dunno how to break this to you, but he DOES have an ISP, it's the college....
Internet Service Provider....kinda neccisary to get online....

As for free SMTP servers, hard to find, because alot of them wind up getting bounced as open-relays (even most of the ones requiring authentication).

Because we all know that helps stop soooooo much spam....

Hah, I ommited the hopefully-helpfull-part of my message....sorry.
I was going to say, tell him to contact his network admin and find out why the SMTP doesn't work....

OK, apparently he lives in student housing with his wife (who is actually the student). To use the university SMTP, he must be a student/staff, which he obviously isn't. So while he has internet access, he can't use their SMTP (needs user university name/password, and can't use his wife's - don't ask me why, his wife is a weird girl :)). He has his own computer.

Thanks for the Softhome link -- I'll pass it on.

On a related note:

I just got my MSN broadband at home (hooray!), but still can't figure out how to send email -- it seems MSN doesn't allow non-M$ software access to their SMTP servers (I'm using Netscape). What a bunch of idiots. Good thing I can use my company's SMTP server. Maybe I should post s separate topic.

Advanced Direct Remailer. A little SMTP server proggy that you can use on your own machine to act as an SMPT server. I use it whenever my ISP has mail server problems. :)

notfred, I wish I could use Unix with MSN broadband! They don't allow it, or at lest that's what I was told.

jjones, thanks for the hint. I'll look into it.

I'm afraid I mixed up two topics here :)

I told my friend about Softhome, he is trying it now, and he's not a Linux user (I know, his loss); he uses Win98. I'll pass to him the other links, thanks, guys!

The other thing was MSN's insistence to use Outlook for email if you have MSN. I'm more or less forced to use MSN since they are the only provider of broadband where I live, but I hate LookOut. I'm calling them today again to check out my complaint from yesterday. It's not big deal for me since I can use my company's SMTP server for now, but I'm pissed that they have their system setup not to allow non-MS software access to their server.
