I've already tried nether.net, but that requires having already signed up (and the webpage to that sight is down), and freeshell.org, but I can't figure out how to create an account bc I'm too Unix illiterate (read dumb). If you know any shell accounts out there, running any OS, please post...

If I had a faster dsl connection I would hook you up. Google for free root. There is a shell account where they give you root on a box. Not the best solution, and deffinately not permenant, but it might help you learn a bit.
