I guess they are giving it out but their business model is razor-thin.

Silly non-profit. =/

Can't imagine making enough advertising dough.

It seems they are using the ads on the page to raise the money for the rice.

The difficulty rises as you get words right. See if you can get to level 55. ;)

1000 grains and level 33 so far.

How much does 1000 grains of rice cost?

not sure how you can say that. I'm sure between getting advertisers and finding suppliers that will help them out, they should be easily able to afford to buy the rice and give it out. I think it's a great idea

A quick google found about 20 cents per pound for rice (white) and 29000 grains per pound. Hence sending a check for 50 cents would do much more for your time.

Well the encouragement to go through levels and continue to accumulate grain is a direct draw AWAY FROM the Click-Through-Rate of their advertisements so the advertisers get a lower bang for their buck and the ad space isn't worth as much so the more you play, the harder it is for them to break even with their advertisers.

You're better off going there, playing up to about 5000 grains and clicking an ad to pay for what you cost them. =p

The non profit probably has a deal with a few distributors, possibly getting it at half the price?

How much does rice cost to grow?

They could really cut costs if they helped support rice farmers.

No middle man. =)

I'd suspect the UN World food Program (where they send the rice to) should probably be able to cut deals that are just as good. Donating to them is a lot faster than playing a game online to donate rice. How much money do they make in ad revenue in the time it takes me to generate 1000 grains of rice. How does that relate to their costs, if it is less, what is done with the extra money? With a donation directly to the wfp, you save yourself time and accomplish the same thing. For people with LOTS of time and no money to spare, this could make sense. Of course there are downsides to donating directly as well.

I'm not saying it is a bad thing, I'm just saying it is a inefficient use of time. If you donate a million grains of rice though the game (which would take a LONG time) you have only donated about a 20kg sack. Which costs less then most of us make in an hour.

I'm sure it is helping feed people and it makes people feel good about themselves, both are good things. I just think it is a novelty that will wear off once people realize how little then can actually donate with their time playing the game.
