Free Refurbished 9.1GB Fibre Channel 10k hard drive

MacResQ is giving away refurbished Seagate Cheetah 9.1GB Fibre Channel 10k rpm hard drives for free.

Click here for SCSI hard drive

Then apply coupon code "FREE" and it will knock the net price to $0. Shipping starts around $4 or so...

I assume its a one per customer deal ...

Ciao,

The free drive is HALF HEIGHT and FIBRE. Nice for free but that's about all it's worth since half height are large and fibre is super expensive to set up.

RDMustang1 - You're wrong - this is a super hot Uber-flaming deal!!!!!!

No - just kidding. Just thought there might be someone out there who could use one of these. I forgot to write that it was FC, sorry about that ... I've updated the header ...

You're right, it belongs in Hot Deals since it's a nice price (can't get much better than free) but I just wanted to warn people that it was fibre (which most home users who have scsi - the few of us that are left - most don't have fibre channel cards) and also it's a large drive (takes up a 5.25" drive bay).

ordered 7, if they actually come in and actually work, i'll build a custom raid 0 case for video or music editing. woohoo!

I just wanted to give a shout out to my classmate who made a tidy sum building Fibre Channel arrays for people. You can get the drives refurbed (or free, in this case).
So all you need is an HBA, and some T-Cards.

Other info

If you have a little bit of electronics skills, you should be able to roll your own T-Card pretty cheap.

The hell with it. I bought 7. The shipping was 12.66, that's like lunch and breakfast for cost. I will go hungry for a day to cover it. Now the fun part is to look for a fibre channel scsi card

You can get a dell 650f on ebay for about 600 and QLogic 2100F HBA for about 50. I ordered 3 since I have a 650f and one of the drive appears to be on the verge of breaking. It's nice to have some extra spare too.

By the way, they just called and they are only giving the "first" one for free. The additional ones cost 3.5 each.

bummer, just got a call from them and she said it was limit one per customer :-( had to cancel the order.

These drives run hot, they're relatively noisy and they are refurbished which means you don't know how much life they even have left in them? Are you guys CRAZY?!!?! If you really want to mess with fibre channel, at least get some 36Gb drives, which aren't that expensive. I see NO benefit in playing with these particular drives. It's not like anyone is going to give you the fibre channel card and cabling and enclosure. Everything is gonna cost you. And for what? So you can put together some lousy 2 generation old drives in raid?

Save your time and money. If you want raid, go get a nice cheap standard SCSI radi card and a couple of nice 10K 36gb hard drives. That's equivalent, in space, to 8 of these loser drives. And it'll be faster, and cheaper and quieter and less hot.

Or go get a IDE raid card and put a couple of 80gb (or whatever) 8mb drives on it. Faster, quieter, cheaper, smarter.

did anyone else get a call saying that they could only recieve one free driver per customer? Sounds like a weak deal now.
