Hey guys, I'm looking for a good, FREE program that could convert an .mpg movie to .mp3 format. I've googled an searched, but everything I've come across has an evaluation period that makes them stop working after a minute or so.

I'm trying to put the music and voice-over of a film trailer in a video I'm editing.

If someone could point me on to some good programs I'd be very appreciative.

Thanks!

You probably want to extract it as PCM since audio in MPGs is usually MP2 so converting it to MP3 will compress it again and you'll lose quality.

This might work.

Like Nothinman said, extract it to WAV and use that if possible, because the MPEG is probably already compressed and compressing it again to MP3 will probably yield a noticeable loss in quality.

It's been a while but I think VirtualDub can do that, I always just use the PCM audio out plugin of mplayer when I want to extract sound from a video.

yea what you want is to extract the audio, not convert it yet. either a program will extract it to uncompressed wav or whatever compressed format it was orginally in..mp2 for mpg? i forget. its also called demuxing the audio to help you google search. to separate the video and audio

Depends on which route you take. If you do just demux it then you will get MP2 or whatever format it was compressed in, but if you tell the player to save the decoded PCM stream then you get it in whatever format the player sends to the sound card.

TMPGEnc 2.5 Free Version will do this. Launch the application, File->MPEG Tools and select Demultiplex to get the audio stream.

WinFF will do it. It does all types of conversions and has a really simple UI and esay to use batch mode. It is useful for converting *.flv files(from youtube/online streaming video) to wmv/avi or mp3 etc. and also for converting videos into or from 3gp for phones.
