Anyone know of a decent one? I specifically need something that can import Rational Rose mdl files.

Ugh... I don't envy you. I wasn't a fan of my Software Engineering course. I ended up using TogetherSofts software to do
our sequence diagrams. Not sure if it can import em from Rational Rose though.

ArgoUML may help you somewhat:

Can ArgoUML read an MDL file generated by Rational Rose?

No. MDL is a Rational Rose-specific format. You are much better off getting Rose to export an XMI file.
Rose has an add-on that can create XMI format from an MDL file that is available here.

You will then need a tool like UML/Tool (available at umltool.d-a-t.com) to convert that .XMI to a version that ArgoUML understands.

TogetherSoft ControlCenter probably can. You can download a time-limited eval, or fork over $4K for the license!

I've read a lot of accounts that TCC is an excellent UML modeler, compared to Rose, but it is a Java Swing app that hordes memory like crazy.

Yup! The program would use over 300M of RAM in win2k! It got the job done for my class though... We used ArgoUML for our Use_Case diagram though.

I use Poseidon for UML. Pretty much the same as ArgoUML, but more commercialized/productized, so things like copy/paste work, and the interface is a little quicker.
