1. You suck. Bye bye rating.

2. You MUST get a progressive scan DVD player otherwise it's a waste of good HDTV. Toshiba / Panasonic make good progressive scan players for that price range.

If he has an HDTV, you should get a progressive-capable player...

Panasonic RP56 gets my vote.

And you get a 1 rating.

May I recommend the Panny (Panasonic) RP-56. It is $229.99 at the local WORST BUY (Best buy... worst buy... whatever).

Progressive scan picture is like 'butta'. Silky smooth and detailed. Can't go wrong there. The only negative I have found on the player is that it does NOT have coax digital out... it only has crappy optical out (which is just as good... I just didn't have an optical cable, so I was bitter).

Awww, what a nice thoughtful gift to get your dad! :)

You still get a '1' rating from me though! Haha, his rating is down to 1.85 already. Let's see how low it can go. :D

I'm a DVD newbie, so maybe you guys can help me out.
Pretend I have a plain, non-HDTV, and I am looking to get a DVD player. Would progressive scan be a feature that is necessary?

I read this:

Progressive-scan DVD players will work only with digital HDTVs and are not compatible with older analog sets, due to their higher horizontal-scanning frequency of 31.5kHz.

here: http://www.cnet.com/electronics/0-3219398-8-6226096-1.html

Does progressive scan do anything for people with normal cheap TV's?

Nope, it'll do absolutely nothing. Good non-progressive players are the Panasonic RV31 and Pioneer DV-343 or DV-440.
