You may laugh, but I think the Harry Potter books would be a good place to start, as they are geared towards a younger audience. Aside from them, try picking up the local newspaper or USA Today, as newspapers were how I learned to read when I was very young.

Well, Amazon.com lists them as for ages 9-12, but they would get you comfortable with reading novels.

Great Expectations (only part of my 9th grade education I enjoyed)
Breakfast of Champions or anything else by Kurt Vonnegut- Easy reading, good content
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy- Read them at age 8 and loved them. Read them again at age 12, loved them even more.
