I haven't even had to time to look at this yet. I am subscribed to the Lindows newsletter and the latest one includes this:

"Each day, more people are experiencing the benefits of an MS-free PC (lower costs,

Get a Free Computer!

no virus hassles, more stability, etc.), and today we're making it even easier. We're announcing a new service designed to help even more people get the very best Microsoft alternatives including Sun's StarOffice, LindowsOS, Click-N-Run, LindowsCD and even possibly a computer- all for free! Yes, you read right $0, so put away that credit card! This is being made possible by Microsoft. In just minutes, using a simple online process, eligible consumers can acquire many dollars of valuable products including:

A Free PC - A WebStation computer, ideal for Internet activities, and with unique CD features that make it zero-maintenance and virus-free
StarOffice 6.0 - High quality Microsoft Office file-compatible office suite software for your existing Microsoft Windows or LindowsOS computer
LindowsCD - The easiest way for anyone to see how well your computer runs Linux without installing any software, just insert the CD and restart
LindowsOS 4.0 - Software to convert a PC into a powerful Linux-based computer running the award winning LindowsOS
Lindows Plus - Get hundreds of the best Linux software programs installable with a single mouse click from the Click-N-Run Warehouse

The Microsoft corporation will pay for the above products for anyone who is eligible, as part of a settlement in an antitrust and unfair competition class action lawsuit against them. Microsoft has agreed to pay up to $1.1 Billion towards purchases of certain qualifying hardware and software items. Just visit MSfreePC and fill out an easy online form using any web browser to receive your share.

A few important notes:

If you do not take advantage of your settlement, Microsoft will not have to pay out the full $1.1 Billion (they get to keep a portion of unclaimed monies)
You only have a limited time to file a claim so you should act immediately.
Free PC supplies are limited and available on a first come, first served basis.
If you are interested in the products above, please visit MSfreePC.com to get them. You may also donate them to a worthy cause such as a local school or church if you do not have a need for them yourself. If you have a friend, relative or co-worker you feel might be interested in this program, please feel free to pass this onto them and encourage them to visit MSfreePC.com."

Like I said, I haven't had a chance to look any closer at this - but $1 billion worth of free crunching power might be hot deal of the century :)

You would have to have purchased a lot of software in CA, or else lie through your teeth to get any of that :)

Well I have always been curious about Lindows and I have bought MS products so what the heck. Plus if you qualify and fill out the form, when done you can go striaght to lindows and download it. I am starting with the one that runs from the cd so I can see what it is all about.

Err pics.....um ok. Haven't really taken many. Will look at what can be done :)

<back on topic>
I've had time to have a quick read through the site and yeah it seems a bit slick. Still California residents may as well try to get some of their money back.

Why, if this action has succeeded, hasn't any other group sought the same outcome?

As for Lindows I haven't loaded up the latest iteration, though may do so soon. I put Ver 3.00 on an older machine and it was fast and smooth on the install. It found everything and got it working in about half the time that Window's averages. The interface was good and it was nice to have a genuine GUI with a logical feel to it. The wife sat down and it used it happily for hours on first sighting.

The click'n'run interface (which is what their core business really is) worked well enough but some of the programs just wouldn't work on loading, though not many. I understand that this has something to do with the way linux stores and accesses library files?
It migh be neat if a few DC clients were loaded up into the click'n'run warehouse. :)

I qualify for $82 (3 windows licences, 1 office, 1 works). That's not enough to qualify for a free pc. If I throw in my parent's purchases (1 windows license and 1 home essentials), I'm up to $103, but I'm over the 5 license limit for "easy" claims.

This has got to be a scam.... No proof or anything is needed and the only award left is the Lindows software. And this is from a Lindows site not an MS site.

Ahhh I see what is going on... Lindows is giving you a credit to buy stuff from them and they will be the one's filing a claim on your behalf.

So basically they are giving you software that can be had cheap and then filling your claim and keeping the cash.
