Free Passive Video Card ( Geforce4 Ti4200 Underclocked )

My objective was to buy a new video card that was passively cooled even though I really liked my Geforce4 Ti4200 (good compatibility & performance for the money). After looking I didn't see anything I liked, so I underclocked my Leadtek vivo Geforce4 Ti4200 to 90mhz Core and 180mhz memory (effectively 90mhz) and unplugged the gpu fan. My shuttle system is much quieter and now I can use it in my Audio Recording Studio! 🙂. I wonder how much farther I can clock it without getting artifacts? Thoughts?

Damn, when I read the title I had my hopes up you were gonna give me a ti4200 for free 😛

Isn't the 3d performance horrible now though?

I think someone sells a huge sandwidth type passive cooler for GF4s, forgot the name though.

Those often don't fit into Shuttle XPC cases. The 9600NP (almost all of them are passively cooled) should fit, though. Although if you don't need much 3D performance, the ghetto method suggested above will work for most cards if you can underclock them far enough. 😛

Well since I'm only doing Audio work and not gaming, I'm only working in 2d software Audio apps (mixers, tracking, etc). I'm sure 3d performance would be hindered horribly.

I'd sell the TI4200 and get yourself a Matrox G400 dual-head.

Yes, you'll lose 3D gaming ability, but you'll gain the sharpest image quality available and most stable dual-monitor operation bar none. Dualhead is a very, VERY nice feature with audio apps!!

If you're running an LCD and/or want some 3D gaming on the side, a passive Radeon 9600 is by far the best choice - they run extremely cool and most ship with only a heatsink to begin with.

That's my two bits. 🙂

thanks bluemax,
I thought about the 9600 for a while, but saw some benchmarks showing that the Geforce4 Ti4200 has noticeably faster 2d performance & since I hate those minor delays in 2d mode, I stuck with my Leadtek Ti4200.

The Zalman heatpipes? (HP-80 series). They work well, but are huge and heavy. Not good for SFF cases.

I'm running a GF4-4400 with a hp-80a on. Its great that its silent (the old creative fan was a real screamer) but the card runs hot (both the GF4s I've had were pretty hot running), and increases the case temp, which makes me wonder if the rest of my quiet cooling set up is enough to deal with it.

If your aim is near silence rather than power, then I think it'd be better to do as Matthias99 says, and get a cooler card to start with.

Best card around passive and nothing will touch it is radeon 9800 pro ultimate. Very nice zalman cooling top and bottom.

The Ti-4200 in my parents computer run for who knows how long at stock speeds afterthe fan quit, it was a little warm but it still ran ok 😀

Still doesn't fit in a Shuttle case. Please read the thread before replying.

My brother also had one with a fan failure. It crashed occasionally in 3D games but otherwise seemed alright.

Now, I'm running core at 69mhz and memory @ 120mhz I believe. It's still very warm to the touch...maybe my new 92mm exhaust fan upgrade will fix that 🙂 Can't you tell I'm from the ghetto? Look at my avatar!😉

It is. But not at 90/180 thats for sure. You might also consider a cheap GF4MX440 with passive cooling. Since gaming isn't your thing, it will do just fine and quietly. So 9600np or GF4MX440, whichever one is cheapest.

i tried runing my 4200 at 100/100, and i was using a CPU heatsink, which is a lot bigger, and in 2d, that heatsink got crazy hot.

i think you have to also undervolt your card. there are voltmods out there, check extremesystems.org, and thei forums.

So long as there's still SOME kind of heatsink on there! I heard really good things about a certain s370 heatsink that's wonderful for making video cards passive! 🙂 Not too big either - should still fit in the Shuttle XPC!

The heatsink is fairly warm, but not blazing hot. I diligently replaced the original thermal compound with Type44 and it's cooling very efficiently, no artifacts or hiccups 🙂. can you say Leadtek? 😉
