i am looking at free sites for online backup. would be helpful if you share your experience on which sites are good.

xdrive
mediamax
orbitfiles

basically i am looking for about 5gb of storage (more is nice). unlimited bandwidth would be nice. so looks like xdrive is a nice option.

any suggestions? thanks.

i agree with lilcam. those sites sometimes lose your files and whatnot. since they have no obligation (you're not paying them) they don't have to make sure your files remain safe.

Personally, I'd just use the GMail Drive application for GMail instead. They give you a fairly reliable 5.5GB of space, and you can always make multiple accounts if needed.

Amazon S3, very reliable and only 15 cents per GB per month used.

However, you'll also need a way to connect to it reliably. I use JungleDisk which was only $20 and works very well.

Personally I am much more comfortable with Amazon holding my data in a bucket/blob type system than I am with Google holding it accessible much more easily. Plus Amazon S3 is cheaper than every tier of Google's offering:

10 GB for $20/year for Google, for Amazon this would be 15 cents/GB/month, or $18/year.
40 GB for $75/year for Google, for Amazon this would be 15 cents/GB/month, or $72/year.

Granted, for Amazon you must also pay 10 cents/GB uploaded, so that could make it work out to the same or even a few bucks more, but still, as you said, Google will rummage through your data surely, Amazon will not.
