The newsleecher company has just announced that they will offer newsleecher w/ supersearch (newsleecher is a newsgroup reader program) for free for giganews unlimited subscribers (giganews is a newsgroup provider company).
Details at the bottom of this page:
http://www.newsleecher.com/?id=buy

Personally I like the idea of newshosting and bought my newsleecher w/ supersearch separatly because of the cost of giganews, but giganews IS the best newsgroup provider out there.

Note that it says something about "this offer is only available to users who don't have a Giganews usenet access account already."
So it may or may not be nessasary to cancel your current giganews account and get a new one, let us know your experiance, if it works with your current account.

About supersearch: I used to use newzbin and paid for the premium searches, but after finding supersearch I'm now only using that. Newzbin relies on human editors for results, so they dont always pick up all the postings. Supersearch uses a search engine to search headers, so IMHO its more complete. Supersearch has been tremendously improved since its initial release as well. Previously you needed to search for a fairly exact phrase, now if you search for:
Superbowl Ad
It will turn up matches of superbowl.ad superbowl_ad, etc. As well you can now exclude unlimited terms from search like:
superbowl Ad -2004
That would exclude any hits with 2004 in the title. They also raised the maximum hits to 15,000.
More details in this thread about usage of supersearch:
http://www.newsleecher.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7855

I highly reccomend newsleecher and supersearch, I love it, regardless of if you want to pay the premium for giganews. I used to use newsbin pro

Quick comparison of newshosting provider vs giganews
Giganews has unlimited for $25/month. 10 connections, 70 day retention
Newshosting has unlimited for $15/month. 8 connections, 40 day retention

Its not unheard of to get 300kbyte/s from a single connection, so most people should be able to max out almost any internet connection with either provider.

If you are wondering WTF is usenet/newsgroups, you can get additional information here:
newsgroup tutorial: http://www.slyck.com/ng.php
wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet
Notice the 2+ TB figure in wiki, thats what is posted daily to newsgroups.

Anyway, just though that people who already use giganews might want to know about this so if they have been paying for newsleecher (perhaps newsleecher without supersearch), they can now get newsleecher with supersearch free.

Excellent post, very informative and complete. I also subscribe to NewsHosting Unlimited and use NewsLeecher, but without the SuperSearch, instead using NewzBin. The $10 per month more for Giganews over Newshosting amounts to $120 per year, whereas NewsLeecher with SuperSearch is only $30 per year. Even though Giganews has longer retention, I just don't think they're worth that much more than NewsHosting. I may try SuperSearch, though, just as an alternative to NewzBin. I don't consider the 50 cents a week ($2.25 a month) charge for Newzbin to be very important, but I am always open to better alternatives. Hmmm... 50 cents a week, times 52 weeks, is $26 a year -- that almost pays for Newsleecher and SuperSearch.

But how do you know what's new? I check Newzbin daily to see what's happening, with SuperSearch how would I know what's new, and what to search for?

The first rule of USENET is you do not talk about USENET.

EDIT: ESPECIALLY in "Hot Deals". WTF were you thinking?

Yeah, I guess I hadn't thought about that since I normally dont do that.

However, you can still use newzbin even without credit, you just cant get the nzb files from them. So you can still do browsing to see whats new :)

http://www.usenetserver.com has been doing this for a while too, and I found theirs very easy to use as well. Just search for stuff, add it to an NZB, retrieve it and drop it in your client.
I searched thier website under FAQ, support and sign up and I see no mention of a free registered version of newsleecher w/ supersearch. If you have more info on this please elucidate.

BTW, with supersearch, there's no need to mess with nzb files. You just highlight the files you want, and add them directly to your queue. So it takes a step out of the process :)

I figured it was a hot deal because of the free software. And I'm not sure why you would not want me to talk about usenet? Its one of the oldest parts of the internet, its been around a while. I think since 1980 which is over 25 years. Its not exactly a secret.

here's the response i got from giganews tech support. looks like we'd have to cancel and re-subscribe.

Greetings,

Thank you for contacting Giganews Technical Support!

The promotion that offers the NewsLeecher software for free is a special
promotion that is being offered by the NewsLeecher organization. This
promotion is only available for new Giganews customers.

NewsLeecher has chosen to offer their own software free of charge under the
terms and conditions that they have outlined on their website. If you
would like to know more about the details of the promotion, you will need
to contact them directly at http://www.newsleecher.com/?id=support.

I am very sorry that we can not offer you more information. I can
assure you that the Gignews Support department is always available,
24/7, to answer any questions or concerns that you may have with
Giganews or any promotion that we might launch.

If we can further assist you in any way, please let us know. Thanks for
choosing Giganews!

Man I've been considering switching to giganews from newshosting. My only problem is that I've herd the giganews "unlimited" plan isn't as unlimited as they would have you believe. I've herd that mass downloaders (such as myself) have had their accounts closed by tech support. Is this someone any of you have herd of?

No. I've known people that do 200 or 300 gigs a month from them and dont have issues.

HOWEVER, I know that newshosting recently started checking that multiple IP's weren't using connections at once. I think that since 3 or 4 connections could more than max out an average DSL, people were "sharing" the cost and limiting themselves to like 4 connections each. So newshosting sent out warnings for multiple IP use and started closing accounts. (BTW, this is only simultaneous use by multiple IPs, if you get disconnected from DSL and get a new dynamic IP, they dont have a prob with that).

My guess is that any rumors about giganews were either something like that, or you are mixing them up with comcast.

Comcast is the cable ISP that despite having advertised unlimited usage, cancels accounts after some secret limit (generally thought to be over 100 gigs a month).

I hadn't heard anything about anything like that. They are still all gung ho about p2p. However, even if they did, like I said, its been around 25+ years and they cant do much about it. Shutting down a particular newsgroup would just mean that people would make another or post on another. The decentralized nature means that they would have to contact ALL ISP's to delete posts they didn't like, which wouldn't be worth it. As well, in general RIAA/MPAA try to go after uploaders, and since 99.9% of people using newsgroups only download, they probably would not be affected anyway.

And besides, there's plenty of totally legit content on newsgroups anyway, including plenty of discussion groups with very active discussions (kinda like forums).
