Been with them for a number of years now, very good when it's working.

Retention is getting better and now they have added upto 10 simultaneus connections if your bandwidth is fast enough to take advantage of this 😀

GIGANEWS FOR LIFE!

Anyway, I've used UNS for years now.. quite literally.. Giganews is even better, but seeing as this is a hot deals forum, most people will probably opt for UNS.

Oh, and to get you started cuz this is all probably pretty confusing for some of you out there, check out the tutorial at:
http://www.slyck.com/ng.php

Then head on over to http://www.newsleecher.com to get a binary grabber and set it up with that UNS trial information 🙂

amazing that people pay for illegal downloads!
downloaded boston legal from the newsgroup, not bad... i get better speeds on torrents, so think i'll stick to that free alternative instead 😉

I don't know how you could get better speeds with torrents. My connection is maxed out on newsgroups all of the time.

I've been searching for an alternative to torrents.

What is a good newsgroup reader program that will perform the the downloads appropriately? One that allows to find all the files (lets say.. if a certain download is divided into 100's of files, with certain file names) and download them in succession, and any neccessary decoding, etc?
Sorry if this is such a newbie question.. but the only news access program I've slightly used is the sorry @$$ Outlook Express..

I use newshosting.com. Giganews is too expensive.

You've used both services? Giganews retention is up to 70+ days, have you found the 40 day retention is a problem with newshosting.com?

giganews isn't expensive at all when your ISP uses it to provide usenet service. The only thing I hate about my ISP is that while they don't throttle header downloads, they very definitely throttle the actual binary downloads. Still, 150GB/month isn't a bad bit of data to grab.

I have Comcast, and they do use Giganews. However, they limit you to 2GB / month. Thats just a drop in the bucket... I do like the 70 day retention though. I ended up just going with the unlimited Giganews account. I just wish there was a way to search the groups before downloading all the headers.

I think Giganews is worth it. At least if you are a heavy user.

Also worth mentioning is Yottanews, and Teranews. Both offer free subscriptions for light users.

try binsearch.info to make your own nzb and to search the groups before download any headers...its an alternative. there's also a extention for FF users

Why did I not see this until 2/16 4PM EST?

usnet that TimeWarner/roadrunner provides is the reason par files were invented, nothing but incomplete posts.

GrabIt is a good one that I've used for quite awhile now. Also has NZB support 🙂
