Free Mcafee Antivirus for Comcast users

Hello,

If you have HSI, Comcast, login to comcast.net and click on Security.
Since you are a customer, you are entitled to a free version of Mcafee's AV, Personal Firewall, and some other security program.

I was looking to purchase Mcafee too, glad I got a recent mailing stating this offer.

No you can install on several as long as you have a different email address for each one
and a different password. Last I knew, comcast allowed you up to seven different email addresses.

Bad deal, IMO. McAfee is bloated and isn't as good as some of the free virus programs out there, specifically AVG and AntiVir. AVG has automatic updates, AntiVir askes you every few weeks to update it. Both are very effective against viruses.

Configure the automatic updater then. :roll: Even if you don't it takes less than 10 seconds of your time to manually run the updater.

The automatic "updater" is pretty lame-for me it does nothing more than notify me there is an update available-it doesn't download or install automatically (unless 've down something wrong in it's setup). Also, it takes me far longer than 10 seconds to download updates for AntiVIr-their server is usually pretty hammered. Three to five minutes is par for the course. The other day I went to update my father's machine on 49k dialup-I gave up after an hour and a half. (Admittedly, he has probably gone months without an update).

But my main gripe about inadequate automatic updates means that you shouldn't install the (otherwise fine) AntiVir on an unsophisticated user's machine-like an elderly relative.

you can get mcafee free AR all over. with this you have to let them load a program in your active x before you can load the antivirus program which installs immediately, you can't wait til later. no way am i going to let them put their spyware on my pc

@OP: McAffee has been available for download from ComCast.net at least since June(when I started doing HSI tech support for them) and probably even longer. I advise most of my customers to use AVG if/when they ask, unless they seem like total morons, at which point I promtly direct them to the download page, and give them the McAffee support number =D.
I am sickened by the number of people who have Norton on their machine and think they are safe though.

Just a friendly piece of advice as well...I've had at least 5 reports of the installer completely breaking XP Home PCs now(BSoDs, Lockups on the splash screen, and a possibly unrelated ScanDisk crash after the install). Be careful and back everything up before even trying this. And don't be calling ComCast when you have a problem.

I just moved to comcast cable modem from DSL last week. I saw this from my main comcast.net login page and tried it out. So far so good. The antivirus actually detected a few things that AVG didn't.
