Circuit City has the Actiontec USB Internet Phone Wizard for $49.99 after a $20.00 Mail In Rebate. The PCI version is even cheaper at $29.99 after a $20.00 dollar Mail In Rebate.

This is a awesome deal since it allows you to use a Regular Phone/Cordless Phone to make free Long Distance Phone calls thru your ISP (whether it's dial up, Cable, ISDN DSL etc. Minimum requirements is a 33.6 modem. The unit connects to your pc via a USB cable. It's comes with 11 selectable Free Phone Services such as Dial Pad. (www.dialpad.com). It allows you to call any anywhere in the US and Canada to a regular phone (The person on the other end doesn't need to have the Internet Phone Wizard!!!)

MY Review:
I picked up the USB version tonight at CC. You connect your Regular or Cordless phone to it. You then connect your modem (Dial Up ISP) or phone jack to it. Install the software shut down the conputer hook up the USB device and turn on the Computer. Sign up at one of the 11 supported Free Internet Services such as Dial Pad (which I am using). Your phone works as a regular phone. When you want to make a long distance call: Connect to the Internet if you have a dial-up ISP. Launch the Internet Phone Wizard software and hit the pound key twice on your Phone which will automaically launch the website to Dial Pad ect. Login and Place you Free Phone call!! I use a Cable Modem and I called a friend of mine and it was almost as clear as a regular phone call. A very very slight Tunnel effect was heard. This is a awesome deal if you have Family or Friends out of state etc. Note: my friend lives about 20 mile from my house. I still think it was a good test since it still goes thru wherever Dial Pad is and then connect to my friend. I ended up getting it since I uses AT&T for my local Phone service and my wife and I call alot out of AT&T's 15 mile local calling area. This unit will pay for itself in one month at my house. Circuit City has a 30 day Money Back Guarentee so if don't like it take it back.

I Hope this helps some of you with those darn long distance phone bills.

The link below takes you to CC's webpage. Just Scroll down alittle and you will see both products.

Internet Phone Wizard

shoot, now I have 30 bucks less. Good deal thanks. I have been trying to make something like this for a while. I am a poor college student, so the free internet calling is good, but I get very sick of having to talk to a mic and listen to head phones.

Thanks again
Geoff

I forgot to mention it comes with a six year warranty. I tested it with my computer shut off and I can still use my phone which is plugged into the Internet Phone Wizard.

The only problem I had after installing it was I had to turn up the Capture volume so people could hear me. For some reason it was set to the lowest setting. This only affects the phone when used thru the Internet.

95Cobra-R,

This sounds pretty interesting. Does it have any limitations, ie. call length, listen to advertisement, etc? I've just checked the review on Cnet and there seem to be lots of unfavor comments there about it.

Has anybody else used this before and can share the experience?

Thanks,
Mark.

I was wondering when a product like this would come out. I have been using yahoo messenger which has worked great, but they are going to stop giving free access soon. Net2phone is my backup, it is also a good free service. When I last tried dialpad it wasnt very good. I recieved in realtime but the other end was experiencing a 3 second delay!!! I will have to give it another look.

Pretty Cool

One concern I have is number of services that are available to place free phone calls. Of those 11 companies, how many are still active? If dialpad goes belly-up, is this gadget worthless?

Win2000 isn't listed on their website. Only Windows Me and Windows 98 are listed. I will call the Company to see if Windows NT and 2000 will be supported.

Here is the details on the 14 companies. There are 11 listed in one section of the list and then 4 more are in another section. It appears that one of them was duplicated. Not all of these are free. But there are enough of the free ones to make this thing a hot deal:

I hope this device works a whole lot better than simple a headset / mic through a PCI soundcard which was very choppy for me .

Hey Guys,

If anyone is interested in getting this, they are offerring a 30 dollar rebate instead of the old 20. Just tried calling thru my DSL and the quality is so so... has some clicking sounds but since it's free and I don't have to use the mic, I am cool with that.

Anybody else got it and can share the experience or suggestions on which web calling service is good?
