you mean illegal cable (with a jim carrey lisp) :) Honestly, I've never heard of someone tipping a cable guy for an install, I'd keep the money.

No. They're paid to do that. :(

Unlike pizza/food delivery people, these guys are paid well. Pizza delivery you get paid minimum wage plus whatever tips. That type of job they get paid well to drive and do that. :(

I agree w/Mztkyl. But, I'd offer them a soda or coffee or something. This puts them in a good or better mood. They are more inclined to do a better job for you (i.e. a "quality installation" as opposed to "just another dish to put up") if they see that you're a "good guy."

I use this technique all the time w/everyone from the cable guy to the washing maching repairman. It works every time. :)

Give the guy five or ten bucks. It's not going to kill you financially and tipping is ALWAYS a good idea.

I tipped a cable guy $15, because he did something extra for me. They provided the cable between the jack to TV as a part of the installation. So I had him do something a bit extra and provide me with 100ft of cable to add an additional jack upstairs and he was hot too..

You didn't happen to ask him if he had another kind of cable that he wanted to lay...did you? :p j/k (put the gun down)

Tipping??

Like djs1w said, only if he gives you something extra. ;) Or if he's cute??? Uh.. that too.

But seriously, I wouldn't tip... the system you bought was probably overpriced enough so that the company still makes a profit even with free installation.

My brother installs Dish Network (they now own DirectTV). When they have free installation Dish Network pays the installer the $100 not you. They make up their loss by having you commit to a years worth of programming. No need for you to tip.

I tipped my cable installer. When he was leaving, I asked him how much it would be for an extra digital box. He said, "well, it's 6 bucks a month, but you can have this extra one in my truck." So now I have an extra cable box for my welf friend who doesnt have a cable ready TV and I get to charge him the extra money for the cable bill when he decides to be an a$$hole about stuff.
Tip well. It pays.
