IMO, buying domains from 1and1 is a shifty proposition. I've heard that it can be troublesome trying to set it up for hosting with a different host.
 
This was already posted in Hot deals at least a week or two ago.

For what it's worth - from the fine print, it appears that 1&1, by default, autorenews the domain after that first free year.
