If you ever plan on using this website for any real purpose in which you wouldn't want to lose the domain name, spend the $2.88 and get it from Yahoo or Namecheap. Yahoo is cheaper and lets you register @ $2.88 for up to 5 years, namecheap charges $3.48/year however gives a free year of Whois Guard ($9/year at Yahoo).

1&1 is obviously in this to make money and so you get what you pay for, when it comes around to the second year of hosting/registration I wouldn't expect them to make it very easy on you to cancel. There is a reason it's free.
