Don't worry about it. Free Edition V.6 good until new year, then you can get Free Edition V.7; just read their web pages a little more carefully ;)

No story here. The topic title is wrong.

I switched my machines from Norton 2002 to AVG and Avast over the past year. I haven't had any problems with either (and no viruses either). They're both low-footprint and don't slow down the systems as much as some other anti-virus software does.

AVG Free Edition isn't going anywhere!

But AVG 6.0 is... Anyone using AVG 6.0 in general should be prepared to migrate to 7.0 before the end of the year, this includes Free users as well as 6.0 Professional Users. AVG Free 6.0 is being replaced by a version based on the much more robust 7.0 core however.

To recap the Free Edition license policy, the product is intended for use on a *single* home computer only :).

Those of you that bought AVG 6 are very likely entitled to a Free upgrade to AVG 7.0 - Upgrade here :
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_upgrade.php

Hope this helps clarify things for those of you that are wondering... AVG Free is alive and well, and it will continue to be - just based on the 7.0 core.

If you have any other AVG related questions, feel free to inquire - We are an Authorized AVG Distributor in the US and should be able to help.

Happy to help.

AVG is certainly a very powerful antivirus product. Fortunately for those of us that are interested in performance it does it's job without substantially impacting system performance :)

Does AVG 7.0 use the same or more system resources than 6.0? I like 6.0 because of it's low usage of memory and CPU cycles, I hope 7.0 will be the same.

AVG 7 is a bit heavier than 6.0. Cpu utilization wise I would say it's very similar, however, expect it to use between 20 and 40 megs of ram depending on what components you use (and I'm referring to the Professional products with those numbers)

It's still very light compared to the major competitors out there, it makes minimal modifications to the registry and the number of components running are "very few" also compared to the competition. Most of our business and picky home users (gamers!) are thrilled with the product because of how light it is.

Do expect an increase in resources required to run 7.0 versus 6.0 though.

You can grab a free trial at http://www.freeavgtrial.com if you want to check it out first hand.
