I have a question about what I believe to be a scam, but since it's from a decent HVAC chain in the area I'm mainly curious.

I got a letter along with some sob story about how the first quarter into April is a terrible month in HVAC land since nobody is looking to replace their stuff during that time of the year. They still have people to keep on staff, so the owner takes a loss to keep his workers employed during this time. What they're offering is a "free" furnace & A/C unit, provided you pay for the $650 installation. They claim it's better than nothing, and helps get through the rough few months until May.

Now I don't see how this is a good business decision at all. He claims these letters are limited (of course they are 🙄) but I've seen other companies offer similar stuff. Is this just a widespread scam, or a legitimate issue in the industry?

I'm wondering how they'll screw me... will it not work properly and they're expecting me to keep calling them to fix it (more $$?). It looks like they did it last year too and I'd expect to find a bunch of complaints about it but I haven't found any.

Most likely there will be some extras and an upsell along the way.

Your best bet would be to get the phone numbers for the last 5 people he's done this for and ask them how much the finial bill actually was.

The 650 would barely cover the cost of the furnace (gas, forced air); let alone the cost of the AC unit, which I'm led to believe is significantly more. And, there are plenty of similar types of contractors, e.g., masons, who work 8 or 10 months of the year, and collect unemployment the other 2 months of the year. No reason a heating/AC place couldn't do that.

Smells like there's some sort of fine print.

google the name of the company, any yelp/google reviews? BBB complains?

They have good and bad reviews. I've asked some of my neighbors, and some of them use this company for their HVAC maintenance and stuff. They really like them. Others online have posted issues, but that also seems to be more related to a poor service person than the whole company.

Yeah I don't know. I imagine these aren't top of the line Trane units or anything, but it might be worth looking at.
