It looks awesome. I haven't had a chance to try it out. I wish there were more combat flight sims out there.

Edit:

Okay, I tried it and the interface seems really buggy. Drop down menus don't work properly and it really needs some 1920x1200 love. Still, I think it will be fun once it works properly.

I remember reading the falcon 5.0 manual in detail on a long car ride back home to illinois from florida, I was obsessed. After installing it, it wouldn't work due to some bug.

Maybe that was 6.0?

DOh, turn back the clock

Falcon 3.0 (1991)

I don't know why it wouldn't work, but Falcon 4 is the latest official release. The IP was bought by Lead Pursuit and they released Falcon 4 Allied Force in 2005 or so. FreeFalcon is a community mod that goes on top of Falcon 4.

As far as I know there's no Falcon 5 on the horizon. :(

My bad, I was thinking of Falcon 3.0 (1991)

The problem with many flight sims is that they're more simulation than game. When the printed manual is as thick as a phone book, and that's the condensed version, you're in for one heck of a steep learning curve.

I bought the Falcon 4 binder edition a very long time ago. Seemed cool. But when I realized that I literally have to STUDY the game, almost like the real pilots do in the academy, and have a joystick/rudder/pedals worth at least $100+ to get the full experience, I regretted my purchase, but couldn't return the game. :(
I still have the CD, manual and the binder all in perfect condition if anyone is interested in buying.

LOL I considered it a major achievement to be able to just take off. Landing? Eff that. I just plowed the aircraft into the ground at full afterburner (didn't need to lower the landing gear as I had already sheared it off during my takeoff by purposefully neglecting to raise it after surpassing the maximum safe speed). After I read the chapters on radar operation, I uninstalled the game.

I'm not unwilling to put in some effort, but I got the feeling that I would have to put in more study time than any college course just to play a game (Err, I guess they aren't really games anymore, which probably was the problem).

It's actually not THAT difficult to get a basic understanding of flight/systems in Falcon 4, though in depth understanding does take a long time. Too long for me! (I'm somewhere in between.

I don't think they are there any longer, but there were some amazing "after action" reports a guy did and posted on simhq. He learned the game and chronicled his training mission experience with screenshots and writing. I learned a TON from reading these, they were a fun read. He even went into his campaign missions in great detail.

it isn't too hard to learn all you gotta know how to do is switch the various radar modes and you can use ccip bombing so you dont gotta mess with a2g radar

love this game tho, nothing else really feels like it in gaming

FF5 seems good to me, it certainly looks good

for a good start I'd get F4AF and use its manual, 99% of the guides work no problems and its step by step.
