Free disk space slowly decreasing?

I'm running XP Pro and my disk free space on my C: is slowly decreasing. I had 2 gigs free about a week ago. I installed nothing and now it's down to 1,433 megs. I cleared all disk cache and all temporary downloaded files.

Does the paging file slowly increase in size or something?

Any way to stop the growing mass that is Windows XP?

Ok, so I'm a copycat. I too have noticed the gradual increase in space that XP requires. I'm sure there are multiple causes for this, tracking them all down is something that I have neither the inclination nor time to tackle. Good luck!

go to regedit
hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\session manager\memory management\

make "clearpagefileatshutdown" 1

that is, if it's there at all, I think it is but I can't really remember. I'm on 2k now so I can't check.

Edit: Oh yeah, reboot after that 😀

ok, i did that. Thanks for the tip. Any way to recover the space that windows has already eaten?

Clearing the pagefile at system shutdown is a security precaution, the space will only be taken again by windows when you boot (and it will slow you down a bit as it's not likely the pagefile won't be fragmented).

As someone else posted, this is most likely system restore keeping backups. You can configure to what % of your disk you want system restore to use, you should knock that down some and should see the space free back up. I don't recommend turning it off entirely, it is a usefull feature.
