Free data recovery software?

During my last upgrade the partition table got all screwed up on one of my data drives.

I've run File Scavenger by Quetek and it has found all of the files that are on there, but it costs $40 to actually recover them.

Are there any free recovery programs? Or should I just pay the $40 and use File Scavenger?

I've used File Scavenger and it is worth the money.

PC inspector file recovery is pretty good. And free. I'm sure there's better software out there, but for the price it's the best I've found.

Unfortunately, it doesn't recover partitions on a boot drive, so it can't help my situation
