I've got two of these collecting dust, are there any mods for it or special software that will actually make these things useful? The novelty wore off really quickly on these things.

Get em, rip the LED's out, and use them in your custom case.

Make a nice red glow...heheh

Someone I know took one, used some app that someone wrote to get rid of the "serial" of the cuecat itself, and just used it as a standard barcode scanner, and inventoried his entire CD collection, and dvd collection using Access. Apparently, if you take a while to figure the thing out, it has its uses...

What would be the point of inventoring your CD/DVD Collection? i could understand if you were renting them out or something, but other than that what is the purpose? I can just look on the shelf and tell you my DVD collection. The only possible use of these things is to somehow rig a whole crap load of them together and make popcorn. (ever seen the movie "Real Genius"?)

Oh man I have two that are still sitting in the bag they came in. Going to find out about that program you mentioned Undream. I would also like to catalog all of my DVDs and CDs.

ThaPerculator, I want to have a list so I can trade movies with my coworkers. Now I will know exactly what I have trade (have over 200 of them). Might also be fleabaying a nice chunk of them and the list would be on a spreadsheet to pick from as well as not having to type in all of the titles.

i have one i modded so that its a regular bar code scanner with NO software needed. You just hace to cut one of the curcuits on the hyundai (i think its hyundai) chip and you got a reg bar code scanner and not that garbled stuff it puts out. no software needed now. just a reg ps/2 barcode scanner.

DVD Profiler is a program that catalogs your dvd collection, and lets you crank out spiffy little contact sheets or data pages if you (like me) are anal about your collection.

cueverterallows you to use a cuecat to input all of your titles. It took about 2 hours for me to enter more than 400 dvd's.

I've got two of them & finally got around to using one to scan my dvd collection (you can see the link in my sig). All you need is the DVD Profiler software and a program called cueverter which will scan straight into DVD Profiler. Someone here (bradm20) told me about it & it took me about 20 minutes to scan in 100+ DVDs.

I think there might be something that allows you to catalogue CDs as well.

I'm thinking of writing a little app that will let me use one of my three CueCats to scan empty boxes just before I throw them away, and will generate shopping lists. Sounds like it could be useful...

The CueCat with a little bit of software (or even hardware) hacking will make it a useful barcode scanner. The hacking portion gets rid of lame encryption they employ. I use a program called CATNIP (google search: catnip cuecat) that will output a regular barcode like I typed it on a keyboard. Do you think I actually type the delivery confirmation number when I ship something to you? LOL...

Have you sold stuff on half.com? You can use the barcode scanner to list your book or CD instead of typing it in.

There are tons of uses for barcode scanners.

You just have to think about how it will make your life easier.

noxipoo - do you have instructions on your hardware hack? Sounds like the best solution.

Does rat shack require personal info (name, address) when you pick one up?
