This may be a more regional thing so I apologize ahead of time. Back in the day, I was searching on the internet and stores for the best cell phone deal possible. I really wanted the Nokia 8290 but couldn't find it for less than $199.00 dollars anywhere. This was when the phone first came out. Then, an asian friend of mine was like, just get it in Chinatown, it's free. I couldn't believe it, obviously these phones were stolen or "fallen off the truck", was the first thought that came to mind. Turns out its legit. Apparently, cell phone companies like Verizon, Voicestream,ATT,etc. pay these mom and pop stores a commision for every new line they open. The stores have to buy the phones though. So, lets say the commision was $300 for a new customer who signs a one year contract, and the 8290 cost them $150, the chinese stores give you the phone for free and make the difference, ($300-$150), $150. Most American stores would charge you the retail $150 for the phone and make the full $300. Now, you may ask why the chinese stores would be willing make less. The answer is simple, competition. Everyone in chinatown is doing it so they have to do it. They would make more money by selling more plans to people rather than making more per customer. As a final precaution, the stores make you sign an addition contract with them that says if you cancel your contract within 6months, you have to pay them $300 dollars. This is protect themselves in case you cancel because if you cancel not only do they lose the commission from ATT, Verizon, Voicestream, they also lose the cost of the phone. So without further explanation, here are the juiciest deals I could find. The chinatown I am talking about is in NYC, but I'm sure you'll find these deals in any chinatown. You can also find these deals in Flushing, NY Main Street.

not gonna flame, but these "chinatown specials" have been pretty well known and established. 🙂 and if you speak chinese, chances are you can get an even *better* deal hehe. i almost got the v60t on att for about $100 out the door... enjoy.

Hey, are there any online vendors that I might be able to get a plan like this through? I mean if they can do it in china town, why wouldn't they just make an online version of their shop anyway?
