Is that why he yelled ban? I just checked one for a member here, I sold my car today so I signed up for unlimited reports so I can check the cars i'm intrested in & thought I would help people out.

Well, to put it succinctly...

Posting of VIN's can (and probably will) reveal an owner's (current or previous) address. With that information, you will be able to find out just about anything you want to about that person with the information gained from that report (be it through a legal company, like the one I work for, or a shady company similar to the many found online).

Anything from SSN, credit report, driving history, criminal history, etc. can be obtained from just that VIN depending on who you go to.

Although most states have updated their requirements regarding the resellers agreement, there are so many more shady and 'fly-by-night' companies out on the web where this information is easily obtainable. They won't care if you want this information for legal purposes. They'll only want your money.

That is why it is recommended, if possible in your city/state, to cover your VIN with something on your dash to cover it and keep your identity private. If a law enforcement agent needs it (or anybody else that needs it legally for that matter), then you can easily reveal it to give them access to check your vehicle's records for the proper reasons.

Just use an envelope or something on your dash like it's nothing. You'd be surprised how many people get their info stolen about them from their VIN.

Just a tad of advice from somebody in the business.

damn now i'm paranoid again. thanks for the info.

Sorry Chiboy. I thought a lot of people knew about this. When I saw you posting for others to post their VIN's, I thought you were joking. I hope you were anyway.

Regardless, no harm meant on my part to you. 🙂

I had no idea, wow you can do a lot with just a VIN #. I'm suprised they are almost in every listing for a auto sale 😕

Too many people like to list their VIN in the sale ads to 'back up' what the car came with. Because, most of the time especially with older and classic cars, the VIN reveals the state of the car as it came off the line (interior color, custom package if applicable, engine size, etc...)

They reveal the VIN to show they're telling the truth about the car but they don't realize how much info that number gives up nowadays.

Not legally, and not even particularly easily, so I don't worry about it too much 🙂 If it was that easy I'd simply walk around with a flash light tonight, get the VIN to my neighbors, and start opening credit card accouts with the SSN I eventually get my hands on.

Ok _I_ wouldn't, but others would.

It has nothing to do with privacy. I could go to mall parking lot and get hundreds of VINs. The problem is that the mods have said doing this violates Carfax's TOS. I disagree, but those are the rules. They will lock this thread, so I'd go ahead and not respond to anymore requests.
