Free BSD - Network Install (FTP)

Hey all of you BSd gurus help a newbie out-

I am installing Free BSD4.4 (as Open is only up to 2.9) ( from a local ftp share. Can someone point me to some documentation to give me a hand?

I have the boot disks built and can get to the install prompt but the trouble begins after that. I am interested in exactly how the ftp shares have to be setup. With Linux I found that if I extracted the ISO images to a directory the install would procede correctly but with BSD I am not gettting something.

Give me some help.....

Thanks

/edit- heresy on my part got Open and Free confused

open BSD 2.9 is based on BSD4.4.

you can't compare version #s of different distros. mandrake 8 isn't neccessarily newer or better than redhat 7

Once Again-

Not being intimately familar with the BSDs (n0cmonkey is/was the catalyst for this foray into BSD) I have again opened my mouth only to change feet.... I am now installed. I am curious as to what the most commonly prefered X interface is? I am looking for something that is close to KDE ( I am very comfortable with KDE)
