I'm thinking the reason its free is because the initial "OMGNOWAY!!!" craze is dying down and the only way they can continue peddling their false fear inspiring "products" is to make them free.

Before anyone gets carried away with this "book" do some reasearch and see how much of it is preying on peoples fears and distorting facts to make a profit.

Sorry from the thread crap.

Hubbert's Peak is named after a Dr. Hubbert who analyzed U.S. oil production in the 1950s and (correctly) predicted that U.S. production would peak in the 70s. The theory is that his method of analysis can be expanded to other producing countries to predict peak world production.

Is there anything to it? You decide.

I converted My car over to run on used cooking oil from Resturants.... take that OPEC!!!

My Car...

Engine.

I have driven roughly 10,000 miles so far without setting foot in a gas station :D

But how much prep do you have to do to make that oil usable by your engine? Not to mention trips to all those restaurants. I might be wrong here but it seems that the tradeoff for free miles (with veggie oil) might be the time it takes to get them. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

and that veggie car is awesome. i heard about these conversions being done, but never really saw one. so how do you prep your oil? what kinda mileage do you get? where does the oil go in? does injection still work normally?

I spend about a half hour a week collecing 35-50 gallons of oil. Usually I'll collect oil while I am out doing other things. In some cases like the Chinese Resturant, I'll call in a to go order and pick up some food and fuel. I have a hand cranked Pump and I pump the oil into 5 gallon jugs. I bring the jugs home and let them sit for a week or more so all the crumbs sink to the bottom.

Pump and jugs of oil.

After it has settled I pour it into a 55 gallon drum That has a pump that is hooked up to a strainer and a filter and then a gas pump nozzle. The oil is cleaned and filtered as I fill the car. I pump the oil into the main fuel tank.
Pre-Filter Pump

The conversion I built is a "Single Tank", where the car runs 100% full time on 100% Vegetable Oil. The other wy to go is "Two Tank" system. Where there is a large Vegetable oil tank and a smaller tank for diesel. In those systems the engine is tarted and shut down on Diesel fuel but when it's at operating temp it runs on Veg Oil.

I designed the prefilter system so the so the time investment is minimal in preping the oil.

I commute 1000 miles a week, I use about 25 gallons of fuel a week. Right now Diesel fuel in my area is $2.19... I'll take the $54.75 a week for a 1/2 hours work. my car gets anywhere from 45-53 MPG depending on how I drive it.

The injection still works normally, The fuel just needs to be heated before it's injected. I did install larger europen spec injectors when I converted but, I don't know as that was 100% needed but, it added 20 HP. :D

If you want to know more, Check out the Straight Vegtable Oil as Fuel Forum @ infopop., that is where I learned about how to do it, hung out there and asked questions for a year and a half. This Link goes to a thread on the biodiesel infopop forum. It's pretty much a build log of how I did it.

Nice, Ziptar! It's also worth noting that the car can get up to 50 MPG, yes yes? And, depending on the source, has exhaust that smells like doughnuts :)

Yeah I get about 50ish... Mine smells like something cooking for sure.... I get my oil from a sports bar, Caribiean / seafood place, a Chinese Take Out, and a Golf and Country club. It is usually all mixd together so it just smells like cooking.

I know a guy that uses oil from just one Thai place.... and it does smeel like eggrolls...

That is some cool fuel. Do you think the hybrids will have a major impact on fuel consumption in the coming years? Maybe a vegetable oil - electric hybid is in the works?

I fetched the files but a note says that revised text will be available shortly so I will hold off on printing 'em. I saw this movie recently: endofsuburbia.com which deals with the same subject and is very much worth checking out for those not keen on "book learnin'".

Ziptar, I didn't see your updated info post before... neat stuff, but I notice the final pump is electric so I suppose you will need a generator when the end-times come (or resort to the hand pump) ;)

I don't know abpout vegoil hybrid.. (would that be a FRYbrid?? :D ) but a diesel hybrid would be the shiznit yo. Probably get 70-100 MPG..

Yeah, I could do that, I have a couple of those hand cranked pumps.. But if there is no electricity there are no fryers :Q Unless someone comes up with a solar powered one :D

Ziptar, what kind of emissions problems does vegetable oil cause/cure? I mean compared with unleaded gasoline or diesel? Just curious.
BTW, freaky cool; where did you get the idea?
Thanks in advance. :)

You know, a quick correction here.

Huberts Peak isnt the issue the issue is, and he may have changed it since the version I read but I doubt it, that this man takes NO clear line of scientific reasoning. He makes a point about the economy and then fails to factor in the tiny issue that there are MANY forces that act upon these same systems he says are supporting his theory. In his theory the world is influenced by one force and one force only. The amount of oil being produced/remaining. And he uses all this in a "the sky is falling" context to do nothing but breed pure feer in people. THAT IS WRONG.

If you have a point to make, especially a scientific one, MAKE IT, don't sit there trying to scare the hell out of people, make your point, inform them the best you can, and leave them to decide what the conclusion is. If your point is valid and well written then 98% of the readers should arrive at that conclusion.

I commend you, but hope that you can manage to keep it on the downlow, becuase I have a feeling that if the government found out they might have a small problem with your fuel tax evasion.

What fuel tax evasion? If you ride a bicycle on the street do you need to pay a tax on the food you consume for energy?

Emisions wise it smokes the same a regular diesel but, it's not black hydrocarbons....

Funny you should mention it, The state has a program here I can buy an "Alternative Fuel Decal" That is $90 - $180 a year that covers my road taxes but, It is so new that I currently can't get one from Fla Dept. of Revenue. It took calling for two weeks to finally get someone who knew what it was... so it's in the works.

Excellent post Ziptar. I have considered brewing my own biodiesel for my TDI, but looked at a few sites and the process seems daunting. I will look at your links to see if this is more for the non scientist.
