I'm from NY and my family never insulated the AC. My dad would just throw covers on the outside of the ACs to prevent a draft from coming through.

I had an ex that moved to Dawson, Minnesota. She told me stories of how cold it got, she was going to school and working a bar there. They would be lined up through snow and she'd have to decide whether or not she'd sleep there to be there the next day or quit.

this was 15 years ago almost though...maybe global warming helps

I used to have a 10 by 20 foot walk in frig. for aging sides of beef on my cattle ranch. I could drop that to freezing. There was enough room to chill 20 to 50 kegs of beer, or umpteen 24 packs.

what if your mom and I agreed not to post pictures of our date? would it be fair not to honor her request?

Anyway...I have a digicam, but taking time out to snap off pictures and post them is something I don't do for every thing that happens in my life.

I wanted to take pics of my vehicle progress as I was working on it, unfortunately; that was impossible as I would be stopping...getting cleaned up...starting...stopping, etc.

I have no reason to doubt the OP's story. I don't know of any place the physically pulled out the wall units, but I know those with window units have removed them in the cold winter months as cold air still finds it's way in. It's not that much work for a wall ac though. If it has a 'cage' you can actually screw in a small sheet of plyboard to have a secure 'box' outside your place.

Freezing beer is stupid though and it freezes very quickly. I can throw a bottle in my freezer and within 10mins the neck is frozen solid.
