Maetryx here,
For the record, I've actually come across a bear while hiking in Alaska. It was more than 100 yards away, so it wasn't ass puckering, but it was... interesting. It gave me one glance as it crossed over the ridge I was hiking, and then descended into the next valley. *Shudder*
Almost every year there is a bear tragedy of some sort in Alaska. Last year a boy and two adults drowned in Chena Lakes, about 20 miles from me, when the boy jumped into the lake to get away from a bear. The adults jumped in to save the boy and/or each other and all three didn't make it.
Last summer a Division of Mining employee shot a bear dead that charged her from just 10 yards away. She happened to be the sort of person that always carried a loaded, .357 magnum in the woods. She only had time for one shot, and believe me, she was LUCKY. Most people don't walk away in one piece when a bear charges them from 10 yards away.
Still like trigger locks?
