What is the best? Preferably I want one that backs up the files as the files themselves and not as archives.

EDIT:

1. I guess archives might be a better way to go.

2. Local backup, not online

Actually now that I think about it, archives might not be so bad. What do you recommend if I go that route?

Looks like Crashplan encrypts your backup files. Nothing wrong with that but the OP may need to have the Crashplan software available to decrypte them in case s/he wants to access backed up files.

It's free software, so it shouldn't be a problem to get a copy of it. Also, if you pay for the crashplan service, you can get to your files from any web browser.

But for local computer to drive or computer to computer backup I have not found a easier tool than crashplan.
