What Free AV software works with Windows 7? I searched the threads here and coudnt find one but i thought someone had asked this already 🙂

Avira is good. Just need to do a small hack to get rid of the "upgrade to premium" nag
A google search will turn it up easily.

I think all the vendors listed in the following by Microsoft have a free download of a compatible beta version:

I would have liked to get Norton Internet security 2009 (it is great on my XP build) but unfortunately there is no compatible version. Norton 360 has similar engine but it comes with much more than I care to have (e.g back up, restore, PC tune up). I wonder though if I can choose to not to install these functions.

Latest norton isn't bad at all, actually. They fixed a lot of the bloat/performance issues. The interface is starting to get a little too "cool," bordering on k-rad. But it's not a bad product anymore. My only gripe is its cost.

Avira is awesome for a free app. And it's not hard to . . . not give the program permission to launch that popup. ahem.
