Free Antivirus software, AVG free edition

AVG has a free antivirus program WITH virus definition updates, I saw a link to it in another post about norton av or something and had never known about it before. I am very impressed with it so far and hope that it helps if you are looking for good free virus protection.

I use AVG 7 and it beats the crap out of Norton AV but Norton always gets good reviews from magazines they advertize in. Go figure.

When I first installed AVG it found 4 trojans Norton had missed.

AVG 7 isn't free is it? I've been using AVG 6 for a long time...love it; also people might wanna try housecall's online virus scanner.
 
No, AVG 7 is $33.30 US for 2 years. It just has a different interface and such than version 6. Version 6 uses the same definitions I think.
 
Because of the rave reviews, and poverty, I grabbed AVG when my new machine got hit by slammer. It was a dissapointment on multiple fronts. (Yes, I know some of them are because it's free.)

When I browsed the folder with the virus, a popup whined about the problem telling me to open AVG. No record of popup, no fixing the problem. When I did enter AVG it cought only 1 of the three infected files. What's worse since I backed up my old machine, (with the 80g orignal drive attached) It insisted scanning everything. (The final straw came when I had to do the 3hr scan multiple times.)

Yes, I know it's free, but I don't think I'd pay for 1/3 virus protection.
For $12, I got free ship for Norton Internet Securty 2002, complete with a decent firewall and a year of updates.
 
I know from experience that AVG 6 does not pick up all the virii out there, plus the updates are infrequent and a pain to install (auto installer stopped working for me).

I ended up getting McAfee which does a MUCH better job and doesn't hog as much system resources at Norton.

I'd rather spend a couple dollars to get something that will work as it is intended instead of using free software that won't do its job.
 
too bad the only good way to test this solution is to attempt to try and infect your machine.... which I dont particularly care to do...
ive been testing AVG out on a secondary PC... no probs so far... cant necissarily say I love it, but its not bad
 
I've been using the free version of AVG for about a year now.

I'm very satisfied with it, it's a good program that does it's job well!

The auto-update works like a charm for me, it gets updates about every 2-3 days.

Don't think for a minute you're secure...I've have had numerous trojans go through Norton like a burst condom.

No like AVG?
McAffee then, much better than Norton.

I do know AVG works well because I also run a couple of anti-trojan cleaners and a worm guard program and nothing has got through AVG 7 yet...where as stuff used to get through Norton all the time only to get caught by the Anti trojans or worm guard.

I'm sorry but Norton just wasn't cutting it.

That's acutally a very good idea, with a moderator of some sort to update the thread with the different free versions available and keep them on the fisrt post in alphabetical order.(to avoid favoritism or false accusations of advertising of course)
 
I am very pleased with Panda Antivirus Platinum 7 (or whatever it's up to now). Much faster than NAV Corporate, uses fewer resources, and catches more than NAV (I had them running side-by-side for a while, running NAV before Panda). Panda also flags suspicious looking files that aren't necessarily viruses but behave like them, so your protection doesn't depend entirely on the virus definitions, although they do have daily updates.

I'm not sure how much it costs, but Panda is occasionally given away free (with an indefinite update subscription) to people who qualify. There's a thread about somewhere at FW (and probably here too).
